Sam Coldy grew up in Brighton, then moved to London, and is now studying in Leeds (Graphic Design). He also holidays in Paris. He has been doing flyers for Jodie Harsh and Scottee's clubnight For3ign since October and does artwork for other clubs and bands when he gets a chance in between university projects.

Here's some artwork and answers:

I feel that my piece (top) represents the theme of Nuclear because... we think it will never happen to us. We get on with our lives oblivious to what may actually be going on. Even the war in Iraq didn't REALLY effect us. I took the mushroom cloud as the main focus. It's something strangely beautiful, created from one of the most destructive and horrible war activities. So I tried to belittle such a horrible event or to jest at it. I represented it as a giant mushroom/toadstool, but placed it in our city of London, so it hits home.



Fresh

Right before I did this interview I was... in a lecture at university, then I was watching Dickinson's Real Deal whilst eating.

Do you ask anyone for their opinions on your work while it's in progress?
I tend to ask people's opinions immediately after I finish a piece, then maybe make a few changes.



In Rainbows

If the world was a post-nuclear wasteland, populated by mutant zombies, I would... probably be part of the zombie crew. I have no survival experience and have wasted away to a skinny, drainpipe wearing 20 year-old. Plus since leaving college I've failed to continue playing sport, I used to be quick and good at long distance so in my prime I could've out run them. Saying that, I hate zombie films as they always seem abnormally strong and quicker than the human they once were (Ed - 28 Days Later was not a zombie film, they were infected with the 'Rage' virus).



Low Ideals

Nuclear power is/isn't the answer because... I'm unsure. I don't know enough about it to really state whether it's right or wrong. But as an outsider, I would say it is the right way as its a renewable/sustainable energy source, and seeing as there are so many issues with gas, oil and coal running out, I think there are few alternatives other than to use it. There are worries because it's dangerous, but so many lost their lives in back in the day of mining.


Sexpests

The best up and coming artist right now is...
depends what you class as art. Music is art, and I'm really liking These New Puritans and an up and coming band called O Children. But art-wise, I'm unsure about up and coming, but that Eduardo Recife is still my favorite artist and I think he has been around for years. I love all his collage stuff.

Lately my art has been inspired by... sleeping issues, dreams, mystery.



Airhead

My favourite piece of my own work is... Hmmm, after spending hours on some pieces you kind of get bored. but I like the simplicity and idea of Air Head (see above). It was a quick process, so I guess I'm still in love with the idea. It has some element of fantasy and the unknown to it.
